What is Adidam?

Adidam is the spiritual way given by Adi Da Samraj as an offering to all human beings so that they might be released from suffering and awakened to a greater reality. Adidam is a devotional path whose adherents take on the practices and disciplines given by Adi Da. These practices and disciplines include meditation, service, study of Adi Da’s teaching, eating a clean diet, etc., but these are all supportive of the primary practice which is to turn one’s attention to Adi Da as a way of being available to His spiritual transmission. Adi Da describes it this way:

“With two tuning forks of the same pitch, you may strike one and
the other will start to vibrate in resonance. The spiritual master is the
first fork. The devotee is the second. The devotee has only to release
his or her grip on the tines of the second fork and it will start to vibrate
at the same pitch as the first.”

Adidam is not based on belief in any idea.

When reading Adi Da’s teaching, or watching video of His talks, or even looking at a photograph of Him, some people have a spontaneous devotional recognition of who and what He is. It becomes self-evident that He is a divinely realized being who is transmitting His enlightened egoless state at all times. There is no need to believe anything about Him because in such moments what He is, is plain to see. The Way of Adidam is based on relationship to Adi Da and not on any techniques one might self-apply.

When people have this spontaneous devotional recognition of Adi Da and feel His transmission the feeling is one of reality at the profoundest depth, past any idea of God or physical world. The feeling is one of fullness and mystery, irreducible by conceptual explanantions.

What does Adi Da say about the source of suffering?

Adi Da refers to the ego as an activity rather than as a part of a person’s psychological make-up. He teaches that this ego-activity is self-contraction, due to the fear that necessarily accompanies identifying as a separate limited being rather than realizing one’s true identity as the Infinite Divine itself. In our fearful, contracted state we seek out one thing or another in a continual stressful effort, trying fruitlessly to be happy. This effort is a knot that we constantly suffer. Adi Da teaches that there is only the Divine, only Infinite Fullness, only a Sea of Conscious Light. Adi Da invites everyone into the “reality consideration” of Adidam to Realize our true identity as the Divine Reality beyond the limited point of view of the suffering, contracted ego.

To truly understand this teaching, even conceptually is challenging and requires further reading. Adi Da’s book, My Bright Word, is an excellent place to start.

The Global Community

There are devotees of Adi Da Samraj all over the globe. The primary regional centers are in Fiji, California, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Seattle, Hawaii, London, Berlin, Holland, New Zealand, Australia, and India.

Adi Da’s devotees come from all walks of life, they are artists and business executives, doctors and teachers, construction workers and bus drivers. Adi Da’s devotees live otherwise ordinary lives, but beneath the surface of jobs, family and friends, they’re involved in an intense process of transformation. Each one has recognized Adi Da as an egoless, divinely realized being whose force of transmission is uniquely transforming not just their lives but their entire being.

The Minnesota Community

The Adidam Twin Cities community is a small but highly energetic group of formal, practicing devotees of Avatar Adi Da Samraj. We range in age from late 20s to early 60s. Professionally, we are teachers, body workers, writers, artists, and academics.

There is also a group of people who are simply in the process of exploring Adi Da Samraj and His teaching. They come, as they please, to various local offerings (classes, study groups, workshops, social occasions, etc.) out of a curiosity to learn more.
