  The historical Guru-devotee relationship

Wisdom, grace, and light is personified. This is the ancient understanding of how to grow, be transformed, and liberated from all suffering. Here are some examples of how wisdom and grace has functioned through living human form. Adi Da has stated this very simply as "I am conscious light." "I am who you are."

Ramana Maharshi

Reality is simply the loss of ego. Destroy the ego by seeking its identity.  Because the ego is no entity it will automatically vanish and reality will shine forth by itself.

-'Be As You Are', The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi

Ramakrishna (1836-1886), the great Saint of India

“When going to a strange country one must abide by the directions of the guide who knows the way. Taking the advice of many would lead to utter confusion. So in trying to reach God one must implicitly follow the advice of one single Guru who knows the way to God."

Amma, devotee of Swami Muktananda

"Much is written in the scriptures about the ways and means to achieve the spiritual goal, but the secret key to divine knowledge lies with the Guru. With the study of scriptures one may become a scholar, with his ego inflating steadily, but he may not advance a single step towards God. Books may contain eloquent descriptions of the divine experience, but they cannot transmit it. As the Guru holds the key, it is only through his grace that the Truth is unfolded within one’s self. Therefore, one must constantly strive to serve the Guru.

It is important to understand that devotion is different from reverence. To admire and respect a person is not necessarily to be devoted to him. Devotion to the Guru is that which leads to complete surrender. Therefore, those who possess deep love for the Guru, who have taken the spirit of surrender and the virtues of patience and perseverance take to this path most naturally."

Sadguru Gnanananda

It is not by discursive knowledge that the guru imparts truth but mostly by a silence which changes the heart, which is eloquent and profound, purifying the disciple in every way and establishing him in Reality. The real guru is he who without the aid of words can help the attentive soul hear the ‘Tat Tvam Asi’ (Thou art That) of the Vedic Rishies.

The Guru-Shishya Tradition

It is to meet such an unfilled need for adequate guidance and lead in the inner life that ancient Indian tradition holds up the Idea of the human Guru. This Guru is a human being, living, who has already trodden the path chosen by the seeker and who is in a position to show him the way. Not only show the way, but he also has the power to transmit the truth of his experience or realization to the disciple. In fact it is he who makes the spiritual Ideal living and dynamic for the novice by initiating him into the knowledge of its Truth with a simultaneous impulsion into the practice for its progressive embodiment in his life. Without such a Guru it is well nigh impossible to go far on the Path.

Studies in the Tantras and the Veda, The Guru-Shishya Tradition, p. 42.

I Am your Unique Advantage, because I Am Present in the same kind of bodily form as you—Manifested in the same kind of physical condition, the same kind of nervous sytem, the same kind of brain. In My Case, however, all thsee mechanisms are Raised to an Absolute level of Functioning, such that your entering into Communion with Me brings changes even at the level of the psycho-physical body that you present to Me.

No abstract Divine Principle can serve you in that manner, because the physics of this Process must be directly Present, and the bodily (human) Demonstration of the Process must be Present in a Form that can Do Its Work in your case. That Work is My Purpose. My Divine Avataric Incarnation Fully Manifests the State of the Ultimate Physics of things—Which is your Potential, but not your actuality at the present time. The "abstract Divine" and the powers of the universe are not (in and of themselves) organized for the sake of the immedite transformation of human beings. If people truly enter into right devotional and (in due course) Spiritual relatinoship with Me, they will (inevitably) Realize the progressive process of transformation characteristics of the only-by-Me Revealed and Given Way of Adidam.
